- אָמַד(√מד; v. מָדַד) to form an approximate estimate, to guess; to appraise, judge, deliver an experts opinion. Erub.58b אוֹמְדוֹוכ׳ he forms an approximate estimate of the height of the hill, and passes on. Snh.78b אֲמָדוּהוּ למיתה they (the experts) declared his injuries to be fatal; (Y. ib. IX, 27a bot., also עמד׳) א׳ לחיים the opinion was that he would recover; a. fr.Ḥull.51a אמדה נפשה the animal before taking a leap measures its strength. Hif. הֶאֱמִיד same. Gen. R. s. 64 שהאמידו אותה they had appraised it (the field,as to how much it would yield). V. אוּמָד.
